You have strange cravings during pregnancy… You may, for example, want green almonds out of season. However, some women crave stranger things, like cheese with mayonnaise, smelling matches, or eating meat at dawn… Why is that?
Reasons for unfamiliar cravings during pregnancy
It’s not surprising in your pregnancy that you crave some fruits that are out of season, or some foods late at night. These cravings are your body’s expression of what they lack of nutrients.
It’s therefore possible to crave inappropriate foods in inappropriate times. You may wake up at night craving meat. This is because you have iron deficiency.
You may also have gastrointestinal disorders during your pregnancy, like nausea, acid reflux and constipation… In this case, your body expresses its need for foods that are easy to digest. Therefore, you may crave chocolate with bread, for example.
You may also put ingredients that don’t go together in the same plate, like mustard and vanilla. So far there’s no explanation for this case, except the pregnancy
Try to understand these cravings and of course consult your doctor or nutritionist to help you treat any nutritional deficiencies if you have them. She can also draw the lines that you shouldn’t cross when satisfying your strange cravings.
Pregnancy also affects your sense of smell. A recent British study focused on women who always crave inhaling the smell of matches after lighting them.
Researchers explained this with hormonal fluctuations that happen during pregnancy and cause excessive sensitivity for the sense of smell.
