Are you worried about developing gestational diabetes? Of course you are. But keep in mind that you can avoid it. It can be easily done; it’s enough to just follow a healthy diet. This means eating certain foods that help prevent this condition during your pregnancy.
5 rules to prevent gestational diabetes
What is gestational diabetes?
It’s possible to develop gestational diabetes by the end of your sixth month of pregnancy. It could be caused by elevated levels of some hormones that limit the effect of insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating sugar levels in blood.
In some cases, the pancreas may not be able to secrete the necessary amount of insulin, causing gestational diabetes.
You may suffer from this problem due to genetic reasons, or as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle such as eating unhealthy food and sitting all the time.
Rule 1: Low glycemic index carbohydrates
To avoid gestational diabetes, choose foods that contain low glycemic index carbohydrates that don’t cause elevated sugar levels in your blood.
Focus on eating vegetables, legumes such as lentils and chickpeas, and raw nuts such as walnut, hazelnut and almond.
Rule 2: Fibers
If you suffer from constipation during your pregnancy, make sure you have foods rich in fibers on a daily basis. Keep in mind that they’re not only a solution for this problem, but they also help prevent elevated sugar levels in your blood.
Try to eat more legumes as well, such as lentils, chickpeas, red kidney beans, whole grains, and nuts like walnut and almond. Of course, don’t forget vegetables and eat fruit moderately.
Remember that you need 25 to 30 gram of fibers a day.
Rule 3: Omega 3
If you want to go through your pregnancy in peace, i.e. without gestational diabetes, try to meet your need of omega 3 acids. Some studies indicate that they help prevent gestational diabetes.
You can easily meet your need of these acids through adding a little flax oil or seeds to your meals.
We also advise you to have fish rich in omega 3, such as sardines and swordfish.
Rule 4: Avoid sugary foods
Stop eating fatty foods, candies, sweets, juices and energy drinks.
Be very careful, some foods that are not sweet may raise your blood sugar as well. Don’t eat processed grains such as pastries, white rice, white bread, and potato. Replace them with whole grains, but only have them moderately.
